A REGULAR ebb and flow of material deep in the Sun may be linked to the mysterious sunspot cycle. Magnetic activity on the Sun produces sunspots, which peak roughly every 11 years. To try to find out why, a team led by Rachel Howe at the National Optical Astronomy Observatories in Tucson, Arizona, looked at ripples on the face of the Sun, which can reveal conditions deep beneath its surface. Howe’s team found that two-thirds of the way from the centre, where scientists think solar magnetic fields originate,
